Ohio Student Receives National FFA Award

Louisville, KY. Evan Riggs, a 2012 graduate from Arcadia High School has been named as the winner of the 2013 National FFA Turf Grass Management Proficiency Award. He is the son of Rick and Cindy Riggs of rural Findlay. His Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects in the past have included a placement experience at Redhawk Run Golf Course as an Assistant Greenskeeper. He has participated in numerous FFA activities and career development events including the Urban Soils CDE and Agricultural and Industrial Diagnostics events. To become a finalist for this award, he has completed nearly 3000 hours of employment with the Red Hawk Run Golf Course. His local advisor is Mr. Doug Conine.

Evan is beginning his second year of studies at The Ohio State University’s, Agricultural Technical Institute where is majoring in Turfgrass Management and Fluid Power Technology. He plans to pursue a career as a golf course superintendent. The Turf Grass Management Proficiency Award is one of 49 proficiency program areas in which FFA members can participate to develop a valuable experience and leadership skills at the local, state and national levels.

He has previously won this award at the chapter, district and state levels and was selected as a national finalist along with three other students from the state winners nationwide. As part of this award, he was also named to be a participant of an 8 day tour of Costa Rican agriculture in 2014 along with other national award winners. The winners were announced at the 86th National FFA Convention and Expo held in Louisville, Kentucky recently. This award is nationally sponsored by the John Deere Corporation. The finalists receive a plaque and $500 and the national winner receives and additional $500.

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 579,678 students in grades 7-12 who belong to one of 7,570 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
