Turfgrass Week Activity
Thursday, May 26, 2016
This week, May 22 - 28, we celebrate Ohio Turfgrass Week to recognize the economic and environmental benefits of turfgrass. Enacted by the Ohio General Assembly in 2010, we've worked to educate our legislators and the public on the importance of turfgrass. Here are just a few ways we promoted it this week...
1. The Golf Zone with Jimmy Hanlin
On Sunday, we kicked off Turfgrass Week with OTF Past President, Mark Jordan, appearing on The Golf Zone with Jimmy Hanlin. The Golf Zone is seen every Sunday on FOX Sports Ohio and is available to over 5.4 million subscribers throughout all of Ohio, most of Indiana, Kentucky, western Pennsylvania and New York.
Each week this season, Ohio's five chapters will have a segment called, The Superintendent Report which will highlight the role of the golf course superintendent.
2. Recognition at the Statehouse
On Wednesday, OTF's Brian Laurent and Cindy Vaughn joined Belinda Jones and Kristina Spangler of OPARR at the Statehouse to spread the word about turfgrass!
First, OTF and Turfgrass Week were recognized during Senate Ag Committee session by Senator Cliff Hite, Chair of the Senate Ag Committee.
Then...it was a mad dash to deliver 132 mugs to all members of the General Assembly! Each mug was stuffed with an info-sheet which provided economic and environmental facts of the role of turfgrass.
A special thanks to Belinda and Kristina for making this happen!
Enjoy the rest of Turfgrass Week!
P.S. If you're in central Ohio, be sure to catch Kayla Anderson's ClipNotes on Saturday as we're expecting a special appearance from the Clippers grounds team.
