Please consider joining your fellow turf professionals for a day of fun, golf and fellowship in support of OTF’s scholarship, research and other turf related programs.
Kenwood was founded in 1930. Donald Ross selected the track of land for the 36 holes. A total of 482 acres was purchased. Prominent Midwest golf course architect William H. Diddle was engaged to lay out the two championship courses. On these courses the 1933 U.S Amateur, 1954 Western Open and the 1963 U.S. Women’s Open were played.
In the early 60s Interstate 71 was constructed through the existing courses. Consequently replacement holes had to be built. The leading architect at the time felt that only 27 holes could be built on the remaining property because of the severe terrain. Bill Diddle returned to Kenwood. He built replacement holes and rerouted the existing course into the 36 holes we enjoy today. Mike Hurdzman, Art Hills, and Brian Huntley have since enhanced the architecture.
The two courses which are Kendale, which is gently rolling and easy to recover from errant shots plays to 6,971 yards and Kenview which is hilly, very scenic and all the golf you want from the tips and really makes you think, plays to 6,459 yards. The OTF tournament will be held on the Kenview course. We are proud of our newly built holes 14, 15, and 16 which you will enjoy. 14 has a spectacular waterfall, stream, pond and horticulture. 15 is a Par 5, at the least we wish you luck and 16 is a gorgeous Par 3. Please visit our website www.kenwoodcc.com to learn more about the club and courses. You can better understand the Kenview course by hitting the golf icon on top, then hit the Kenview pictures and select the hole number or scorecard for a description of the hole. The Kendale course will be available for the “Stay and Play” offer in conjunction with the OTF tournament.
There have been only three Golf Course Superintendents at Kenwood. Taylor Boyd built the courses and remained as superintendent until 1949. He was recognized for his quality greens. He also experimented with the use of Bermuda grass in the northern transition zone. Taylor was instrumental in the founding of the Greater Cincinnati Golf Course Superintendents Association. He went on to become Superintendent at Camargo, Losantiville, and built courses throughout the country. Marion Mendenhall was Superintendent from 1949 – 1979. He improved Kenwood in all aspects. He rebuilt the courses after the Interstate 71 destruction. Throughout his career he served on various turf grass association boards. He was well respected and honored by his peers, the members and staff. Dennis Warner has been Superintendent since 1979. Prior to Kenwood he was Superintendent at Portage Country Club in Akron, also the 7th ATC in Grafenwohr, Germany where as an officer he managed 2 officer clubs, 5 enlisted clubs, a hotel and 300 unionized German employees. He served his apprenticeship at Westwood Country Club in Rocky River under Curtis Walker and Bruce Wofner. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1969 with a BS in agronomy specializing in Turfgrass Management and Horticulture. He has served in his professional organizations, volunteered with coaching, Boy Scouts leadership, and Church. He and his wife Alberta have been married 43 wonderful years and are blessed with three great children and their families. He enjoys travel, fishing, camping, family and church life. “Denny” is extremely proud of his staff and their accomplishments. Scott Phillips is the assistant in charge of Kendale and has been with Denny for 21 years. Tim Glynn is the assistant in charge of Kenview and has been with Denny for 19 years. Take a few moments to notice the horticulture around the clubhouse, especially the seasonal display at the front doors of the club. Scott’s wife Paula Phillips has done an outstanding job as our horticulturist.
On behalf of the members and staff of Kenwood we hope you will support the OTF golf tournament and enjoy the fellowship of your turf professionals. We will even have entertainment and a bonfire for your enjoyment after golf.
